Sunnyland is one of Bellingham's older, established neighborhoods, and that means a lot of the homes here were built well before anyone was talking about fiber cement siding, rain screens, or high-performance windows. Whatcom County's exterior contractors who work this part of town see the same story again and again: a house with good bones, decent original construction, and siding or trim that's finally losing the fight against decades of Pacific Northwest weather.

What Sunnyland Homes Are Up Against

Living this close to Bellingham Bay means salt air is a constant, low-grade stressor on anything nailed to the outside of a house. Add in the long stretch of driving rain that defines a typical Whatcom County fall and winter, and you've got two forces working together — salt that accelerates corrosion and finish breakdown, and moisture that finds every gap, seam, and unsealed joint. Then there's moss. In Sunnyland's mature, tree-shaded lots, moss doesn't just grow on roofs — it colonizes north-facing siding, window sills, and anywhere shade and dampness linger for months at a stretch. That combination is hard on wood-based products and hard on paint film, and it's a big part of why we've standardized on materials that were engineered for exactly this kind of climate.

Where It Shows Up First

  • Paint and caulk failing early on south and west exposures that take direct wind-driven rain
  • Soft or swelling siding and trim in shaded areas that stay damp for days after a storm
  • Moss and algae staining on north-facing walls, roof edges, and anywhere airflow is limited
  • Corrosion on fasteners and metal flashing exposed to salt-laden air off the bay
  • Window seals and trim joints that have opened up after years of expansion and contraction in a wet-dry cycle

Why We Only Install James Hardie Fiber Cement

We made a deliberate call as a company: James Hardie fiber cement siding is the only siding product we install. Not vinyl, not LP SmartSide, not Cemplank or Allura, not primed spruce or cedar. That's not a marketing angle — it's a standard we hold because of what we've seen play out on homes in this exact climate.

Wood-based siding products need a well-maintained paint film to keep moisture out, and in a neighborhood with Sunnyland's shade cover and moss pressure, that film gets tested constantly. Vinyl handles moisture fine but expands and contracts with temperature swings, can distort or crack over time, and doesn't hold paint if a homeowner ever wants to change the color. James Hardie's fiber cement is non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and factory-finished with its ColorPlus coating — a finish baked on and warrantied to resist the fading and cracking that field-applied paint struggles with out here. Hardie also engineers specific product lines (its HZ5 formulation, for instance) for regions that see a lot of moisture and freeze-thaw cycling, which describes Whatcom County's exterior conditions well.

None of this means other products are junk — plenty of them perform adequately when installed and maintained correctly. But we install exteriors we're willing to stand behind for decades, on a coastline where salt, rain, and shade don't let up, and Hardie is the product line that consistently holds up best under those conditions with the least long-term maintenance burden for the homeowner.

Siding, Roofing, Windows, and Decks — One Local Crew

Most of the damage we find in Sunnyland isn't isolated to one part of the house. A roof that's been shedding moss for a few seasons is often also feeding water down onto the siding below it. Trim around older windows that's finally failing is usually a sign the flashing and sealant need attention too, not just cosmetic caulking. Because we handle siding, roofing, windows, and decks, we can look at the whole exterior envelope at once instead of patching one system while ignoring how it interacts with the others.

Decks in this neighborhood take their own beating from the same driving rain and shaded dampness — ledger boards and fasteners in particular need to be built and maintained with that in mind. Roofing and window work follow the same logic: materials and installation details chosen for a marine climate, not a generic spec sheet.

Why a Local Crew Matters Here

A contractor who works Whatcom County day in and day out knows which walls in a given neighborhood take the worst of the weather, how moss behaves on shaded roof lines through a wet winter, and what correct flashing and rain-screen detailing actually looks like in practice — not just on paper. That local knowledge shows up in the details: how siding is fastened and gapped, how flashing is lapped at windows and rooflines, and how a deck is framed to shed water instead of trapping it. Those are the details that decide whether an exterior holds up for thirty years or needs attention again in ten.
